I grew up watching the Duggar family on TV and so when I saw that Jinger put out her own book and "disentangling of faith" story, I knew I had to read it. Overall, it was enjoyable and encouraging to read about Jinger's story and how her faith became her own...rooted in the truth of the Bible rather than outside voices or upbringing. She laid out the gospel simply and powerfully throughout the pages. I also appreciated her vulnerability to share some things she's had to work through and how God's grace has been leading her and guiding her in it all. Some quotes that jumped out at me: "I'm certain that if I didn't have the Holy Spirit - if I was not a child of God who was being protected by my heavenly Father - then I would have gotten off the treadmill and never gotten back on. I would have done what so many others have done when the hardships of life and the exhaustion of man-made religion become too much: abandon Christianity altogether." (page 116) "It's easy to think that big events in life, like a graduation, relationship change, or near-death experience, will shape you and set the direction for your life. But big events were not the cause of my transformation. The Bible itself was. I finally understood why God's Word existed. I could trace its main story, and I knew that its main character was God, not me." (page 117) "When I look at the man-made rules I put so much hope in when I was young, I see only emptiness. More emptiness and hopelessness would have greeted me if I turned to the world, just as they've greeted so many who have gone down that path. I'm on a Duggar kick. I recently finished Jill's memoir and watched the Shiny Happy People documentary so I was all in on reading another kid's perspective on growing up Duggar. Jinger doesn't spill the beans or trash talk her family. She doesn't trash talk anyone. She talks about her faith journey and her decision to leave IBLP and turn away from Bill Gottherd's harmful teachings. She talks about how and why his teachings are harmful and the process she took to read and understand the Bible herself. This is very much a faith based book about disentangling bad beliefs from good religion. Interesting and good for her. She seems and sounds happy which is great! (read less)
