I owe Kathy Reichs an apology as I did the most stupid thing, I judged Reich’s books by the crap acting in Bones the TV series. While I accept there has to be artistic licence but the actor playing Temperance Brennan was so wooden you would have lost her in a woods. In this case the book is far superior to the TV series. Temperance Brennan is in the morgue doing what she does best examining bones. Outside there is a storm rolling in heading to hit Charlotte and she is trying to rush home to hide with her cat. There is an old lady in reception awaiting her and she has some picture and a death mask and would like Brennan’s help. While taking the old lady home she gathers as much information as she can before taking cover at her own house with her cat for company. On the way to her friend’s house, who happens to be a drama queen, Brennan receives a telephone call requesting her help. The storm has brought a barrel to the surface and there is a couple of dead bodies stuffed inside it. The case reminds her of a previous one fifteen years earlier, but this one had been in Montreal, Canada she could not help but cast her mind back to that case. Brennan talks to her detective ‘boyfriend’ in Canada many times a day who digs out the old case files for her. Brenan flies out to Montreal, with Birdie (her none to happy cat) and is able to slowly piece together various stories as she examines the science and the historic evidence. While in Montreal someone attempts to intimidate Brennan but runs over Ryan her detective boyfriend. Nobody should really wind-up a woman with skills as they will pay the ultimate price. A great introduction to Temperance Brennan and a fantastic read that holds you from beginning to end. (read less)

IMNSHO, this is the best yet. Kathy's mysteries aren't all that mysterious. They seem to plod along from point to point until we reach the conclusion. The brilliance of this book is how she brought two death situations, in two different countries, together in one bad actor. What was really clever was how the number of suspects was reduced from two to one. But more than the mystery is the education she provides about genes. But she does that in each of her stories. I am provided with an education that I probably would never pursue as a byproduct of her books. (read less)
